Jan Brand MBACP - Counsellor and Personal Coach.

“Helping to Understand the Past
Finding the way Forward”.

As a qualified counsellor I offer counselling for individuals and couples. I also offer personal and professional life coaching. I am qualified to work with groups and offer facilitation and training.

I believe that people deserve to feel happy, confident and fulfilled. If you are struggling with something do get in touch and hopefully we can work together to help you feel better and make the changes necessary to improve your life.

About Me

I obtained my Certificate in Counselling at Exeter University in 1997 and then went on to obtain an RSA Advanced Diploma in Counselling and Groupwork Skills at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in 1998 and a Feedback Communications Advanced Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling at the Hospital in 1999. I am also trained to work with survivors of abuse.

I am a member of The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy MBACP and a Member of the Association for Independent Practitioners. These professional bodies ensure a strict code of ethics and the highest standards of practice and confidentiality. I abide by their code of ethics and good practice.

Since qualifying as a Counsellor I have worked in private practice and in a voluntary capacity for the Charity ‘Home Start'. My counselling clients have come with many different issues including relationship difficulties, abuse, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem and depression.

I have worked as a trainer, coach and facilitator for approximately twenty years. Coaching clients have brought other issues including management skills, presentation skills, careeer choices and planning.

My past years experience working in private practice and the voluntary sector has taught me the importance of approaching each client as a unique individual.

How I work.

I offer a person-centered approach to both my counselling and coaching, providing individuals with the time and space to explore and discuss the issues which may be troubling them. During sessions with me you will be free to explore your thoughts and feelings, both positive and negative without the danger of rejection or condemnation.

Counselling

'Person-centred counsellors do not give advice or offer their own solutions to problems but help clients to understand their needs and to find ways of meeting those needs.'

As your counsellor I will try to

Many people experience emotional difficulties at some point in their lives. I offer individuals of all ages short and long term work on issues such as: Family difficulties, Personal development, Stress/Anxiety, Depression, Loss and Bereavement, Self esteem and Confidence issues, Teenage issues, Questions about Personal Identity, Unresolved Issues from the Past and Traumatic Experiences.

Personal Coaching

‘Thoughtful coaching can help people to learn a lot about themselves which can help them become happier and more confident, thus facilitating change.’

As your coach I will try to:

Your sessions with me will be totally confidential.

I will provide you with a safe, confidential, supportive and non-judgemental environment. My aim is to help my clients to know themselves, to develop and grow in their own way, to become the person that they 'really' are independent of the pressure of others.

Appointments and Fees

Many people feel a certain amount of anxiety when seeking therapeutic help and it may be difficult for you to make that first telephone call or send the first email, please don't worry, I will do all that I can to put you at ease and will be happy to explain how I work. Remember, I offer confidential support.

Our first appointment will be an opportunity to meet each other, explore how counselling or coaching might help and establish a basis for moving forward. At this stage there is no commitment to ongoing meetings. If you do decide that you would like to continue working with me, we would agree on a regular time and day which is convenient to us both.

My fee for regular weekly 50 minutes sessions is £30.

Traditionally counsellors see clients once a week for 50 minutes to an hour and most of my clients opt for this arrangement. However, some clients prefer a session to be longer, whilst for others an hour is too long and they prefer to arrange something shorter.

My work ranges from a few sessions too a much longer term counselling or coaching relationship. I do not have fixed ideas about this and am happy that my clients decide what is most appropriate for them.
